Writing is partly talent and mostly hard work. To become a better writer, you need to practice writing and improve your skills. Whether you want to write a book, a blog post or a tweet, it is important to compose coherent sentences and paragraphs, use rich vocabulary and express unique ideas.
The more you read the more knowledge you gain which leads to more vocabulary you can learn. Reading also helps you learn different methods in writing for example:
"Imitate writers you admire”, read their work carefully in order to learn the unique techniques a professional writer uses. Of course by imitate we don't mean copy their work exactly as it is because then it will be plagiarism. You could at first start by paraphrasing their writing using the same ideas but in your own words so after practice you can gain the ability to create your own style of writing.
Write, Write, Write
Write every day. Write even if you are tired or busy. Write few words, any words. Choose a random topic or pick a writing prompt. Write a diary or a Facebook post. Do not go to sleep without writing. Make it a daily ritual.
Find someone who enjoys writing like you. Exchange your writing. Give each other feedback on ideas, structure and vocabulary. Co-write a piece. Write a dialogue together. Read a book and write a critique. Make writing more interesting and less of a task.
Always Provide Evidence
Whenever you write an expository text, always support your argument with evidence. Provide details, example and statistics when necessary.
Be Organized
Brainstorm. Jot down your ideas in whichever way easier for you. Draw a mind map, free write or write a list. Start with an outline. The length and complexity of your outline may vary according to your topic or text type. Start with a plan even if it is a short piece of writing. An outline helps you organize your ideas and points.
Write a clear and concise thesis statement. A thesis statement introduces your topic. Make sure every paragraph and sentence supports your thesis statement.
(SVO)
The subject, verb, object sentence structure: whenever you get stuck or lost while writing just stick to the usual form of a sentence, the (SVO) sentence structure.
Don't get tangled up into using complex structures if you are not so sure of fitting them correctly in your writing.
Mind Your Grammar and Punctuation
Make sure you write correctly. Writing the most beautiful ideas in broken grammar makes the piece unreadable.
Always start your sentences with capital letters and end them with appropriate punctuation marks. Capitalize proper nouns.
Quotations make or break a piece of writing. If you are not sure how to use a quotation, do not use one. Distinguish between direct and indirect quotes. Direct questions end in a question mark. Indirect questions DO NOT end in a question mark. In direct speech, a statement may be a question so watch the speaker’s tone. Do not give excessively long quotes. Keep your writing simple and to the point.
Colons and semi-colons are not used interchangeably. A colon is used to introduce a list, a title or quotation and separate contrasting parts of a sentence. A semi-colon, on the other hand, separates two groups of words that are so closely linked in subject.
If you are writing formal pieces, do not use contractions. Use contractions in personal emails, personal blog posts and posts on social media.
Use the Right Words
Use familiar words. Do not use refined and complicated words that you are not used to. Consult a dictionary for the exact meaning of the word and a thesaurus for synonyms and antonyms. If you are not sure how to use a word, read it in a sentence. Check commonly confused words if you are not sure on the usage of a certain word.
Leave It to Rest
After your write your piece, leave it aside for a while. Read it after you finish another task. You will see things that went unnoticed while writing.
Ask yourself these questions before you submit your writing. Once you establish your style, you might not need to check if you covered these points:
· Did I use simple words in my writing?
· Did I avoid repeating words and ideas?
· Were any sentences too long, or too complex?
· Did I shift tenses?
· Were my ideas organized and logical?
